History

The Demetz Art Studio is located in Ortisei, a small village nestled in the Dolomites, a famous mountain range in the Northern part of Italy, at the heart of the Alps. In this region the tradition of woodcarving dates back to the 16th century! This art has been passed on from father to son for many generations and still is the main industry of Val Gardena More on History

	The family business Demetz Art Studio was founded in 1872 under the original name of Vincenzo Demetz Figlio. After four generations it is now the leading industry in creating outstanding works of ecclesiastical art and has reached international fame.   The studio counts about 35 full time personnel including artists, such as wood carvers, painters, gilders, carpenters, and an efficient administration staff. In addition, the studio works with the most talented freelance artisans of Val Gardena.

The largest Risen Christ carved in wood of the World

	“God bless your work” said His Holiness, Pope John Paul II to Mr. Ivo Demetz, president of the Demetz Art Studio, and to Mr. Konrad Piazza, sculptor of the largest Christ figure ever carved in wood, 27 ft tall ( 8,00 m), in occasion of the inauguration of the Basilica of Don Bosco near Turin, Italy.
